I'm luthern, branch off of the Chrisitan Faith. God is merely a belief, just like the holy spirit. Many people believe in God and the Holy Spirit, it helps them get through their day, believing that someone is always there, watching over you, helping you become a good person. I like to bridge the gap between science and religion that it fits. And I can believe in both. So many people go to church every sunday and saturday. God is a belief that brings together the masses to sing and celebrate our creation. As for Jesus, maybe he was real. Maybe, people did believe he was the son of "God". Some things in the bible are easy to believe, some are not. Like when, Jesus parted the red sea. Impossible. But there is traces in the red sea to armor and helmets that go back that far. (Maybe another war? Maybe swept from the land into the water?) But in other cases, like Noah making the ark, and surviving with the animals. It's possible. Maybe the population was only in one place. A big flood came, and wiped everyone out. But since Noah and the animals were on the boat in water, they just rised with the water. The floods and tsunamis in India and other poverty stricken countries kills atleast 500,000 people. Like the tsunami a year ago or so. The population wasn't that big back then, so maybe these floods and tsnuamis could have wiped out all those people.

So, "God" is merely a belief like the holy spirit, that helps people rejoice and come together to socialize and have fun. It helps people get through when they are down and it makes people think good thoughts. Many people belief in God and still believe in the science part of it, like me. Some things in the bible are unrealistic. Some aren't. Maybe some were told in more dramatic ways. And was passed down and told around that it kept changing. Then, when the bible was written, that is the story that they had. Ever played the game, Telephone.( elementary game.) Someone starts off with a phrase, and you have to tell it to the person next to you. But you can't let anyone else here. Usually by the end, it's a totally different phrase. Maybe this is what happened to the bible's stories.

Great topic, I am glad someone made it after all.

I'll be honest with you guys, I'm a Complete 100% Atheist.
I don't believe in any Religion, nor any super natural/supreme being e.g "God".

The reason for this is quite simple... Science, Logic and Rationality which more or less are fused.
Now about your questions.

I personally believe that in our history there are several reasons why religion has survived.
For one, is that people have always had the need to explain things which were a mystery to them, therefore "gods" like Zeus, Thor, Ra an many more existed because Human Kind at that time couldn't possibly explain natural activities such as Tornadoes, Rain, Thunder and more.
Another reason would be of course Fear. Mostly the fear of Unknown. For example, Death. A vast majority of people, or even 99% of them... And I perfectly understand why, obviously its not possible to know what happens after death, or what doesn't happen for that matter.

Thirdly, people were controlled much more back in the dark ages. Certainly Religion had the upper hand in our history for a very long time, the Church ruled quite a long time, and did many things to make people depended on religion. Peoples liberties and freedoms weren't taken into account, since the last word was that of the Priests and the Bishops and whatnot. Thats why the "Witch Craft" began, and thats why over 40 thousand women were murdered for speaking against the Church.
Even nowadays, that can be observed in societies. Iran, Saudi Arabia are an example of such societies, where women are oppressed, and Religion rules. An example of oppression, is Women can't drive car's nor can go out without the company of a male in Saudi Arabia, in Iran women cannot divorce without having a very SOLID reason which would include one of these 3: The husband is incapable of impregnating the wife, The husband has a mental disorder and the Husband cannot provide for the family (Economically). You may very well noticed that Domestic violence is not included in these 3 reasons.

Now continuing about the existence of "Jesus Christ". There is no sufficient historical evidence proving that anyone named "Jesus Christ" ever existed accept of course the Bible itself, which cannot be used to prove the existence of this person. Furthermore, even if you would use the Bible as historical evidence, In my opinion, skeptical as I am, i would need at least 2 solid sources of historical evidence proving the existence of "Jesus Christ".

I am more then willing to debate with any member about the existence of any deity whatsoever.

Cheers.

Lol, quoting him pretty much saves me the typing, because he said pretty much what I would of. (But without all the typing!)

To me, anyone who is religious is just a neurotic, weak minded individual who uses religion as a crutch to compensate their own shitty existances. But hey, that's just me.

i agree, to me... religion just seems like a social tool that's been used forever just to make people believe in something, do something, etc.

like the crusades, and now today's jihads... they're just using the excuse of religion (although some may not know it) to invade and capture land other stuff.

I'm an atheist as well because it seems stupid to me, kind of like believing in ghosts, ghost stories, and invisible friends. I could go develop a longer rant-ish post but I do not wish to at this moment.

Well I guess one could argue that with all these scientific theories on multiverses and stuff that God maybe created this situation where you have multiple (perhaps infinite) universes and the one we are in is a simply one of those being played out...Not saying I believe this just saying that religion defies all and any logic. If God is there we won't know it and many of us will deny his/her/its existence until the end...It's a futile argument.

In my opinion, religion is what keeps the base human race sane.

It's the prospect of something after death. Do I believe in mainstream religions? No.

Do I hope/believe in a afterlife? Yes.

I am a religious person, I basically believe that if you lead a so called good life then good can only come after death? Since the beginning of time every race on the face of this earth has had the balances of good and Evil, and gods that they worshiped seen in visions or assumed. Then in the medieval times the Roman Catholic church abused the fear of eternal damnation into people's minds and had them sell out for a purchasable salvation. This is what confuses me though... the way we are and the way things react... cant just be of some random coincidence, think of our very own brains, its so complex and vast we have yet to discover what its really capable of, and just how the laws of physics and mathematics all fit accordingly and tell us what happens and how and for what reason. I love science, but I also believe in a higher being, this is contradictory to the whole big bang theory, but I don't believe that's what exactly happened over a hundred billion years ago. There's some evidence at least, Religion cant be fear based... every race on earth had it and depended on it, its something everyone believed in and had similarities to each other. There will always be Evil or whatever you may call it, and there will always be the so called good, but I just live life to its fullest and learn as much as I can that I find of interest. So whatever... believe in what you want, thats probably key in life to go with what you want, what makes you happy, and help the random peoples in need every now and then. This is a rather interesting topic and I could go on and on, but I will stop here Sleep

PostSubject: I can prove God exists   Sat Jul 26, 2008 3:21 am

My friends.... It is really quite simple.. God does exist, and i will prove it using math!

If A = C and B = C then A = C... right?

So....

If God is love... and love is blind.... Stevie Wonder is blind... so he must be God!

God = Love = Blind = Stevie Wonder

Since Stevie Wonder exists... and him and God are the same thing... according to my math God exists.

Point Proven

I'm seeing a pattern in every religious post. The postee or the replyers simply don't read the bible on a philosophical level. It's plain and simple, but also too much for 1 to comprehend from simply reading a bible and going to church for 2 years. God isn't a chump and he's not going to come to your rescue right when your having issues. Assuming you went to church a little bit, you probably know that everything is for a reason. God could make this a perfect world, but would humans have minds of their own? It all goes back to adam and eve when they screwed over everyone in the future. To sum this up, we are born to sin, its human nature... and if we had a perfect world, we wouldn't have a mind of our own. Lets pretend an alcoholic is having financial trouble and prays to god, is he supposed to help him or not? Money is the root of all evil, thats clear... so does god give him the money that he will spend on booze? or does he stay back and let this man learn a lesson. God might not give you what you want, but everything is for a reason.

Heres my little story, i was 14 at the time and very close to my dad, but my dad died right before we were going to move to new orleans... But a little tsunami came along shortly after. Sure, there is the possibility that we would've escaped... but we would have no house or any of the possessions in it. So what do you think was better? My dad's death or being poor and homeless. Thanks to my dad's death, we now live in Texas and i travel around our state (and to new orleans) with friends just helpin those who need it most... as i said before, everything happens for a reason. I was the opposite of a christian before my dad's death, now i have the opprotunity to help those who need it most... next stop is a christmas in cuba hehe. Wink not everyone has a story, so quite frankly i dont blame anyone for not understanding. I could be in their same shoes and thank god im not (literally? Very Happy )

ps. the universe was created in 7 days right? that would be 7 days of 'heaven' which could equal = 10000000 trillion years earth time (that was an exaggeration lol)... just to clear things up for some less knowledgeable in the ole bible. The bible is far too unspecific for it to contradict itself, or to even fully understand half of it!

Think of christianity as the non lazy man's eternity insurance. You can convince yourself that it's a lie, but its scary to think that it isn't.

btw, post any contradictions in the bible that really stick out
